Well, on ESXi 5.0 Update 1, vmware-cmd no longer brings joy.  The command has apparently been deprecated and replaced by /usr/bin/vim-cmd


vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms - list of all VMs

vim-cmd vmsvc/power.getstate 77 - show state VM ID 77

vim-cmd vmsvc/power.shutdown 77 - shutdown VM ID 77

vim-cmd vmsvc/power.on 77 - start VM ID 77
